Experience the World From Home: A Week Inspired By Salt Lake City’s Museums
Over the past few weeks we’ve been sharing some ideas for worldly adventures from the home. We’re calling it the travel addicts guide to experience the world from home. This week we figured we stay close to home and share some virtual experiences from Salt Lake City.
So whether you are homeschooling your kids, looking for fun ideas to learn on your own or keep the kids busy, we hope you’ll find something fun here to pass the time and experience these Salt Lake and area cultural sites from home!

Experience Salt Lake and Area Cultural Sites From Home
So often we travel the world without being tourists around our own homes. In doing this we often overlook gems that are right on our own doorstep. I realized my last few posts are a testament to this! After we moved to Salt Lake, the third major move in our adult life, we vowed to spend more time travelling locally.
Salt Lake City is the capital city of Utah with a population of around just 150,000 people. It seems kinda small until you group in the entire Salt Lake Valley and surrounding counties which puts the area well over 1 million people. There are tons of fun family friendly things to do in and around the Valley.
We researched some of the cultural exeriences that are currently offering virtual experiences geared towards kids throughout the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding area. They may be closed for now, but that gives everyone the chance to experience them. Free of charge and online!

Monday - Hogle Zoo
Hogle Zoo is Salt Lake City’s small zoo and a great place to spend an afternoon with the kids. They offer several activities throughout the year where you can learn more about the animals that live there and the planet in general.
For a special treat in the winter, you can check out Zoo Lights while enjoying some of the animals who are nocturnal. Personally, I’ve fallen in love with bats as a result of Zoo lights and watching them at night. I find it hilarious to watch them eat fruit while hanging upside down.

Tuesday - Loveland Living Planet Aquarium
Loveland Living Planet Aquarium is one of our favorite places in Salt Lake Valley. We started going to the aquarium when it was still in the transformed grocery store; although, I must say the new building is much better and truly impressive. We absolutely love checking out the penguins and the sharks and the snow leopards, and … well you get the idea.
The aquarium hosts animal meet and greets, learning sessions, and has a super fun Halloween trick or treat for kids. Adults should keep an eye out for Sips Under the Sea which is a culinary adventure that makes for a great date night to explore the aquarium.

Wednesday - Kennecott Utah Copper
Did you know that Kennecott Utah Copper is one of the only man-made structures that can be seen from outer space? Amazing isn’t it? Come one, come all to check out this engineering marvel!
Kennecott Utah Copper is a copper mine that started operations in the early 1900’s. They now produce copper, molybdenum, silver, gold, and suphuric acid. There are 2 Visitor Centers that you can check out during a visit to Utah. One is located at the Bingham Canyon mine with views into one of the largest open pit mines in the world. The second is located at the Great Salt Lake State Park Visitor Center offering views of the Copper Smelter.

Thursday - Natural History Museum of Utah
A visit to Salt Lake City wouldn’t feel complete without a visit to the Natural History Museum, especially if you are travelling with kids. It is packed with activities and exhibits that both adults and children love. Parents may even find they have a hard time sharing as they learn about climate change, earthquakes, and curating antique pottery.
Since the museum has been closed, the Natural History Museum has been hosting online and live stream classes. The classes are targeted at older kids, but can still be fun and educational for kids of all ages.

Friday - Thanksgiving Point
Thanksgiving Point is incredible this time of year with the gardens springing into bloom of seas of tulips. Ah yes… spring brings the Tulip Festival… and it has this year as well, but we’ll need to enjoy it in a slightly different way than normal.
While the shut downs may end after the tulip blooms begin to fade there is still plenty of things to see and do at Thanksgiving Point throughout the year. Plan a visit to one of the many museums, gardens, and farms that Thanksgiving Point has to offer.

Saturday - Springville Museum of Art
Springville Museum of Art is one of Utah’s gems and is located a one-hour drive from Salt Lake City in the beautiful town of Springville. Entry to the museum is by donation making it accessible to everyone who wants to visit and enjoy the art. The museum has several art and sculpture collections both inside and out for visitors to enjoy.
Since the Covid-19 outbreak, the museum has been uploading content to their website. While it isn’t the same as experiencing the gallery in person, it’s still a wonderful way to enjoy the art collections and learn more about the meaning of art.
